The vision of the Occupational Health & Safety Unit is to protect the health and safety of all staff, students and visitors by ensuring that preventative measures, policies and procedures are implemented and enforced for a hazard free environment.
Mission
The Department’s mission is to promote the development of an active health and safety culture to ensure that personnel feel secure while engaging in the many activities carried out at the University. We aim to provide relevant information, systems, tools and guidance for awareness, knowledge and good health, safety and environmental practices.
OOHAS is responsible for the safety and health of all staff, students, and visitors across the University’s campuses.
- Facilitate compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines.
- Implementation and continuous improvement of policies, procedures, and practices for effective OSH management.
- Establish a safe University according to legal standards and foster a culture of attention to health and safety.
- Maintain all OSH records such as training, accident/incidents, permits, corrective action closeout etc.
- Liaise with the fire department regarding emergency, communication, and fire safety requirements and procedures.
- Conduct compliance audits to ensure compliance with the health and safety requirements.
- Establish and maintain an SDS database and ensure its visibility and use within relevant departments.
- Advise and assist Deans, Librarians and Heads of Departments with their OSH responsibilities.
- Hazard identification and the implementation of preventative measures and safe working practices to minimize accidents.
- Investigate accidents/incidents and OSH complaints. Prepare the accident/incident report and communicate findings and intended corrective actions to the OSH Committee and relevant UG Administration.
- Act as a liaison with all related regulatory bodies and related agencies in accident investigation, prevention management and inspections.
- In collaboration with the Personnel Division identify OSH training needs of staff and organize required training.
- Ensure the Vice Chancellor and the University body are aware of the requirements of new and proposed legislation.
- Enhance health and safety awareness throughout the campuses.
